Pastoral Conversation Terms

This page explains what a "Talk to a Pastor" session is, what it is not, how confidentiality works, and the practical rules around booking. Please read it before you book. Booking a session means you have read and agree to it.

What a session is

A session is a private conversation with Richmond Kobe, a pastor of more than twenty years. It has three parts: a written intake you complete when you book, a sixty-minute conversation by video (or audio, if you prefer), and a written follow-up from Richmond within twenty-four hours with what he heard, passages to sit with, and two or three concrete next steps.

The fee is US$60, paid when you book. Sessions are open to anyone, with or without church membership, and you do not need to arrive with your faith intact.

What a session is not

Richmond is an ordained minister, not a licensed therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, doctor or lawyer. A session is pastoral counselling and spiritual guidance. It is not psychotherapy, medical or psychiatric treatment, legal advice or an emergency service, and it does not replace any of them. Where it seems that professional help would serve you better, Richmond will say so and help you think about how to find it.

If you are in immediate danger or thinking of harming yourself, do not wait for a session. Call your local emergency number or a crisis line in your country. The Finding Help Where You Live page lists international helplines.

Confidentiality

What you write in the intake and say in the session is private. Richmond does not share it with anyone, including church leaders, family members or anyone else who may have referred you.

There are two exceptions, which apply to any pastor or counsellor:

1. Risk of serious harm. If Richmond believes that you or someone else — particularly a child or a vulnerable adult — is at risk of serious harm, he may contact the appropriate service to keep that person safe.
2. Legal requirement. If the law in the relevant country requires disclosure.

In either case Richmond will tell you what he is doing and why, unless telling you would put someone at greater risk.

Recording and transcripts

With your agreement, Richmond may make a transcript of the conversation so that he can write your follow-up accurately. You are asked about this when you book, and you can say no without affecting the session in any way. Transcripts are seen only by Richmond, are never shared, and are deleted with your session notes. Video is not recorded.

Your information and how long it is kept

Your booking details and intake answers are held by Cal.com, the scheduling service. Richmond's notes and any transcript are held privately by him. All of it — intake, notes, transcript and booking record — is deleted twelve months after the session, and sooner if you ask. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.

Couples

A session can be booked by one person or by a couple attending together. When a couple attends, Richmond treats you as two people in one conversation, and anything said in the session is heard by both of you. He does not hold secrets for one partner from the other. If either of you wants to speak privately, book a separate session.

Booking, rescheduling and cancelling

• Time zones. Booking shows times in your own time zone. Sessions are held online, so you can be anywhere.
• Video. The session takes place on Zoom or Google Meet. The link is in your booking confirmation. If you would rather talk by audio only, say so in the intake and it will be arranged.
• Rescheduling. You can move your session free of charge up to twenty-four hours before it starts, using the link in your confirmation email.
• Cancelling. Cancel up to twenty-four hours before the session for a full refund. Cancellations inside twenty-four hours, and missed sessions, are not refunded, because that hour has been kept for you.
• If Richmond has to cancel. You will be offered a new time, or a full refund if you prefer.
• Lateness. If you join late, the session still ends at the scheduled time. If you have not joined within twenty minutes, the session is treated as missed.
• Language. Sessions are held in English.

Who can book

You must be eighteen or older. Sessions are not offered to anyone under eighteen, even with a parent's consent; if you are looking for help for a young person, Richmond can point you towards appropriate services.

After the session

Your written follow-up arrives within twenty-four hours. It is yours to keep. Where a Faithful Path book or course is directly relevant to what you discussed, Richmond may include it with the follow-up as a gift; there is never a sales pitch in a session.
